چکیده

We present an experimental study on the adsorption behaviour of Intan-100, a nonionic surfactant, at the bitumen/water interface when the density difference between the two phases is increased by diluting the crude oil with 10% Xylene by weight or using heavy water (Deuterium Oxide) as the aqueous phase. Their equilibrium interfacial tension, surface excess and critical micelle concentration of Intan-100, at 30, 60 and 75 °C, are determined using a spinning drop tensiometer, which gives fast and accurate results for low and high values of the tension. Comparison with previous published data indicate that the use of heavy water is to be preferred over dilution of the heavy crude oil when the densities of the two phases are closely matched.

Title : Thermal Destabilisation of Bitumen - in - Water Emulsions - A Spinning Drop Tensiometry

Nonionic surfactant-stabilised oil-in-water emulsions offer a potentially useful vehicle for transporting heavy crude oils from oilfields to refineries or distribution terminals. Prior to refining, separation of the oil from the emulsion is necessary. Previous studies have suggested that heating the emulsion is sufficient for destabilisation and recovery of the oil. The present work examines th...

Forced desorption of nanoparticles from an oil-water interface.

While nanoparticle adsorption to fluid interfaces has been studied from a fundamental standpoint and exploited in application, the reverse process, that is, desorption and disassembly, remains relatively unexplored. Here we demonstrate the forced desorption of gold nanoparticles capped with amphiphilic ligands from an oil-water interface. A monolayer of nanoparticles is allowed to spontaneously...

Ultralow interfacial tension in enhanced oil recovery (EOR)

Increasing energy demands require improved methods for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Chemical EOR methods are most promising for maximum oil recovery, but, so far, limited due to high costs of chemicals and environmental concerns. Therefore, there is a huge interest in optimizing procedures for chemical EOR that minimize the amount of chemicals needed and rely on natural compounds, thus decreasi...

Surface Tension and Adsorption Studies by Drop Profile Analysis Tensiometry

Surface tension and dilational viscoelasticity of solutions of various surfactants measured with bubble and drop profile analysis tensiometry are discussed. The study also includes experiments on the co-adsorption of surfactant molecules from a solution drop and alkane molecules from saturated alkane vapor phase. Using experimental data for 12 surfactants with different surface activities, it i...
